Chronicle of life and works of António Marcelino Egreja, one of the most prominent benefactors of Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa in the 20th century. In these pages is it unveiled the history of a man of deep convictions, skilled businessman and philanthropist, guided by an unswerving sense of social justice. Between the last quarter of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century, António Marcelino Egreja won credit as a pioneer in the canning manufacturing sector, a devoted finance official or an astute real estate owner. Ten years before his death, in his will written in 1942, he allocates several legacies to family and employees and selects Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa, his rightful heir to a fortune comprised of more than a dozen properties in the capital, twenty gold bars, different types of jewellery, several credit and stock papers, amongst many other assets. This book is the seventh volume of the SCML Benefactors Collection, an editorial series that introduces the benefactors of the secular institution, men and women who, over more than 500 years, have contributed to the mission of good causes of the Santa Casa through the their legacies, inheritances, and donations.
